When a 1.54-hectare stand of Norway spruce had to be felled, the council's forestry team turned the site into an outdoor gallery for the 2014 to 2018 centenary. Chainsaw carvers Iain Chalmers, Andy Maclachlan, Peter Bowsher and Craig Steele worked from images in the local museum collections.

David Powell's willow and steel sculpture Flighted stands among them, beside a memorial to Lieutenant Robert Shankland, born in Ayr and awarded the Victoria Cross on 26 October 1917.
