The tunnel was built for the Maidens and Dunure Light Railway, a Glasgow and South Western Railway line down the Carrick coast. The old track bed is now a traffic-free path that links Alloway, the Birthplace Museum and National Cycle Network Route 7.

The tunnel was cleaned up, re-lit, resurfaced and reopened as a cycle path. The community charity Alloway Railway Tunnel ART then worked with the muralist Chris Rutterford to paint its walls with scenes from local heritage. The charity runs monthly guided tours.

Near the Doon end a plaque marks the well from Tam o' Shanter, whare Mungo's mither hang'd hersel'.

It is opposite the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum on Murdoch's Lone, about a five-minute walk following the signs.
