The first County Buildings went up between 1818 and 1822 to designs by Robert Wallace, holding the county offices, the Sheriff Court and the county gaol. The gaol was later demolished for a large extension by the Ayr architect Alexander Mair. The Duke of York, later King George VI, laid its foundation stone on 10 July 1931.

The gardens hold monuments to the Earl of Eglinton, Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran and James George Smith Neill. Ayr's First World War memorial was unveiled here in 1924.
