The present tower dates from 1882. It replaced an older tower owned by the Wallace family of Craigie, which is where the name comes from.

The niche was built empty and the people of the town voted on the statue to fill it. They chose William Wallace. Local tradition says the tower stands on the site of the barn where Wallace burned English soldiers who had occupied Ayr, the story known as the Barns of Ayr.
