North of the river, Newton was a separate burgh of barony by 1446, with Main Street at its heart. It had royal permission to build a tolbooth in 1595 and 1600.

This five-stage tower with its octagonal spire was finished in 1795. The rest of the tolbooth and the Newton Old Church of 1777 behind it were demolished in 1967. The arch through the tower once led to the church.
